Today is Anzac day.
For many Australians it is a time for all to come together and embrace the remembrance of our nations heros that fought in the wars of the 1900's.
As a kid growing up I never really gave two hoots about Anzac Day. I don't really get into it much nowadays either, but I have the utmost respect for it, and the people that it is all about.
Being over here in Thailand, I am really close to some of the areas that the Australians fought during the Vietnam War era. Just nearby is the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, Hellfire Pass, etc. And only a short flight away is Vietnam itself. One day I will get over there for a look.
One thing that Anzac Day makes me remember is my grandfather. My Mum's Dad. Ron. I was a teenager when he passed away. We were all fairly devastated when he passed away, me included. One thing, though, that I will never forget, and every time I hear it on Anzac day it brings a tear to my eye. The Last Post. As they lowered my Pop's coffin into the ground, they played the last post. If I hadn't been crying before that, I surely began right then listening to that bone chilling music. Thats the single most significant thing I can remember when he died. (Apart from when he came out of the coma before he passed).
The last post sends a shiver through my spine whenever I hear it. I guess that's what it does for everyone around Australia.
Today I am listening to the Essendon Collingwood Anzac Day match. At the beginning they played the last post, and I just had to tell you what Anzac Day means to me. I'm here today because my grandfather put his life on the line for all of us.
Thankyou Poppy....
